Who's Messing with Wikipedia?

Despite warnings from many high-school teachers and college professors, Wikipedia is one of the most-visited websites in the world (not to mention the biggest encyclopedia ever created). But even as Wikipedia's popularity has grown, so has the debate over its trustworthiness. One of the most serious concerns remains the fact that its articles are written and edited by a hidden army of people with unknown interests and biases.

Court rules that teachers can have sex with 18-year-old students

The Associated Press reports that the Washington Court of Appeals ruled that the state law that bars teachers from having sex with students doesn't explicitly include students who are 18 or older. The judges said the law is too vague.

This stems from a case involving a choir teacher at Hoquiam High School and an 18-year-old student in the choir. According to the opinion information sheet, no one denies the facts of the case --- it's the vagueness of the law that was called into question.

It would be interested to see how this might affect the person's teaching certificate, if it is determined that no crime was committed. A teacher found guilty of sex crimes against students have their licenses permanently revoked.

Or, perhaps the law will just get revised.

You can read the opinion for yourself. It's rather interesting how closely the judges parse the words "student" and "minor" to try to determine the intention of the law.

SoCal law school tempts students with free tuition

IRVINE, Calif. (AP) — A new law school opening next fall in Southern California is offering a big incentive to top students who might be thinking twice about the cost of a legal education during the recession: free tuition for three years.

The financial carrot is part of an ambitious strategy by Erwin Chemerinsky, a renowned constitutional law scholar and dean of the new school at the University of California, Irvine, to attract Ivy League-caliber students to the first new law school in the state in 40 years.

Scholarship winners will be chosen for their potential to emerge three years later as legal stars on the ascendance. Only the best and brightest need apply, but the school hopes to offer full scholarships to all 60 members of its inaugural class in 2009. Subsequent classes will be on a normal tuition basis.

Crying Sorority Girl (Youtube.com)

Girl sobs in a car about setting off the fire alarm while her friend tries to control her own laughter.

One of the funniest things I've seen in a long time!

"So many people do bad things, and I didn't mean to"

"Maybe I'll just sweep... I'LL SWEEP THE FLOOR!!"

"I just wanted to make it snow!"

**Back Story**
Apparently, she wanted to make the hallway appear that it had snow in it, so she decided to use a fire extinguisher (this is something that her dad has successfully done in the past). Instead of there just being a "little poof", the entire hallway filled with chemicals that caused the fire alarm to go off in the middle of the night during finals week.

Now this is her in the car upset that everyone at Alpha Chi (the sorority she wants to be in and presumably those who live where the fire alarm went off) hates her. She explains how she isn't a bad person and it was just an accident.

9-year-old called drug dealer over cough drops

Case prompted when student shared Vitamin C candy with friend

A Florida elementary school accused a 9-year-old student of selling drugs for sharing cough drops with friends.

Officials at Patterson Elementary School in Clay County decided, however, not to discipline Khalin Rivenbark, who met with the girl and her father Wednesday.

The accusation arose one day earlier when the child got into trouble after her father put some Halls Defense Vitamin C cough drops in her school bag when she was recovering from a cold, she told Jacksonville's WJXT-TV

She later shared some with friends.

In Georgia, Stir Over Plan for Black Colleges

As Georgia faces a potential $2 billion budget deficit, a state senator has created a stir with a plan for reducing education spending: merge two historically black universities in Albany and Savannah with nearby mostly white institutions.

The proposal was made this month by Seth Harp, a Republican who is the chairman of the State Senate Higher Education Committee, and quickly drew condemnation from many black educators, politicians and alumni.

But supporters say the plan would not only save millions of dollars but also reduce racial segregation in state-run universities.

“Institutions supported by taxpayers should be diverse, educating men and women of all colors and creeds,” wrote Cynthia Tucker, the Pulitzer Prize-winning editorial page editor of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, who is black. “There is no longer good reason for public colleges that are all-white or all-black.”

Nearly half of all men and one-third of women have lied about what they have read to try to impress friends or potential partners, a survey suggests.

Men were most likely to do this to appear intellectual or romantic, found the poll of 1,500 people by Populus for the National Year of Reading campaign.

The men polled said they would be most impressed by women who read news websites, Shakespeare or song lyrics.

Women said men should have read Nelson Mandela's biography or Shakespeare.

Among the 1,500 who took part in the research were 864 teenagers.

About four in 10 of the 1,500 said they had lied about what they had read to impress friends or potential partners - 46% of men and 33% of women.

Among teenagers, the figure rose to 74%, with most saying they would pretend to have read social networking pages or song lyrics.

One in five adults said they would read their chosen material whilst waiting for their date to arrive in the hope of making a good first impression.

Honor Wilson-Fletcher, director of the National Year of Reading campaign, said: "Reading is a brilliant tool for self-expression.

"I love the fact that every generation seems to know that it can help us all increase our potential appeal in the search for love and romance.

"For all the talk of our superficial obsession with beauty, it looks like underneath it all we know that brains contribute to sex appeal too."

Fire destroys 80 homes, injures 4 at Westmont College

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (AP) — Firefighters were racing early Friday to push back a wind-whipped wildfire that destroyed about 80 homes and a college dormitory in the tony community of Montecito, injured four people and forced thousands to flee the longtime celebrity hideaway.

The fire broke out around 6 p.m. Thursday and quickly spread to about 2,000 acres — more than 3 square miles — destroying dozens of luxury homes and parts of a college campus in the foothills of Montecito, just southeast of Santa Barbara. About 5,400 of the community's 14,000 residents were evacuated and more could be forced to flee if the fire spreads, said Terri Nisich, a spokeswoman with the San Barbara County Executive Office.

So,  we now are going to tell people how to dress?  They are kids.  We have been through this before.  It is a trend and will change.  Changing kids dress is not going to change them inside where it counts.

DALLAS —  Dallas Councilman Dwaine Caraway is on a mission: He wants those wearing low-hanging, baggy pants to pull them up.

As part of his ongoing campaign against saggy, underwear-exposing pants, the mayor pro tem held a summit Saturday. More than 100 adults, children, students, ministers, law enforcement officers and representatives from local organizations attended the hours-long derriere affair.

Local youth counselor Calvin Glover even brought a contingent of saggy bottom teens. The group piled into two elevators and made its way to the council chamber. Saggy britches, big belt buckles and untucked T-shirts were in abundance.

Glover, a 29-year-old former sagger who still admits to an occasional offense, said kids today have taken the trend too far, exposing too much of their backsides.

"Come on, man," he said disgustedly. "I don't want to see your dirty boxers that you've had on for two or three days. I mean, really."

Most listened. Others seemed still groggy from the early morning wake-up.

Looking at a toddler sitting on one woman's lap, Caraway said the baby girl had a right not to see dirty boxers. So does the elderly woman at the grocery store, he said.

Caraway told the crowd they wouldn't want someone to show up to their house for a date if their pants were sagging. It would be disrespectful, he said.

Outside the chambers, 16-year-old Ernesto Arias seemed undaunted. He would still wear his pants low — maybe even lower, he said.

"It's just a style. It looks good like that," he said.

Back inside the chamber, Caraway allowed that it was OK to sag sometimes. "You can do anything, but do it appropriately," he said.

"I know I'm preaching, but even if we reach one, that's good enough," Caraway said.

Hope College cancels classes until Tuesday, norovirus is suspected cause of 140 sick students

HOLLAND -- It's being called the "Plague of '08."

Hope College students complaining of nausea and diarrhea started streaming into the college's Health Center on Thursday. By noon Friday, the number of students reporting the same "stomach flu" had snowballed to 140, causing the Ottawa County Health Department and college officials to close the campus and forbid students from "gathering" until 8 a.m. Tuesday.

To keep from spreading the suspected norovirus, students are being asked to stay on campus yet stay away from each other. All classes and school activities are canceled Monday. For the next few days, students can pick up carry-out meals only from the college's two kitchens.

It's the largest closure order due to a contagious infection in the county in at least a decade, health officials said.

At a press conference Friday -- the only sanctioned assembly until the ban is lifted -- county Health Promotions Officer Lisa Stefanovsky said the symptoms are consistent with a highly-contagious norovirus illness, although it may be next week before laboratory tests confirm it.
