NY Post draws criticism from a cartoon that seems to link Obama to dead chimp.

NEW YORK (AP) — The New York Post is standing behind a cartoon that some have interpreted as comparing President Barack Obama to a violent chimpanzee gunned down by police. The cartoon in Wednesday's Post by Sean Delonas shows two police officers standing over the body of a bullet-riddled chimp. One of the officers says the other, "They'll have to find someone else to write the next stimulus bill." 

Civil rights activist Al Sharpton called the cartoon "troubling at best given the historic racist attacks of African-Americans as being synonymous with monkeys."

But Sharpton said the Post should clarify the point it was trying to make with the cartoon, which was playing off Monday's rampage by a pet chimpanzee in Stamford, Conn., that left a woman severely mauled. Police ended up killing the chimp.

In a statement, Post Editor-in-Chief Col Allan said: "The cartoon is a clear parody of a current news event, to wit the shooting of a violent chimpanzee in Connecticut. It broadly mocks Washington's efforts to revive the economy. Again, Al Sharpton reveals himself as nothing more than a publicity opportunist."

A story about the cartoon on the liberal-leaning Huffington Post Web site drew hundreds of reader responses, many calling the cartoon racist and insensitive.

Sam Stein, a columnist for the site, wrote that "at its most benign, the cartoon suggests that the stimulus bill was so bad, monkeys may as well have written it. Most provocatively, it compares the president to a rabid chimp. Either way, the incorporation of violence and (on a darker level) race into politics is bound to be controversial."

Prosecutors file to release recordings

CHICAGO (AP) - U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald wants lawmakers to hear what Gov. Rod Blagojevich says on wiretapped phone calls.

Fitzgerald filed paperwork Monday to release conversations caught on wiretaps to the Illinois House committee moving ahead to impeach Blagojevich.

Federal prosecutors have asked a judge for permission to disclose a limited number of the intercepted conversations in a redacted form.

Fitzgerald says disclosing four calls wouldn't interfere with the ongoing criminal investigation.

Blagojevich was arrested Dec. 9 on federal corruption charges. The governor is accused of trying to sell President-elect Barack Obama's vacant U.S. Senate seat to the highest bidder, but he's denied any wrongdoing.

The newest "secret shopping" scam

The check was for $3,985.50. And with it, the promise of a simple part-time job.

"Our company is a 'Secret Shopping' employment service," the cover letter reads.

Conduct a survey of retail stores, fax the results, and pocket at least $680.40 for your work, the letter says.

"Secret Shopping" buyer beware: The job promise is among a series of international scams designed to separate you from your hard-earned cash, U.S. Postal Inspection Service spokesman Al Weissmann said.

Blagojevich May Resign Despite Statement: Attorney

Gov. Rod Blagojevich could still step down despite his forceful statement to the contrary, one of his lawyers said Friday.

Friday afternoon, in his first substantial comments since being arrested on federal corruption charges, Blagojevich said, "I'm not going to quit a job the people hired me to do because of false accusations and a political lynch mob," and reaffirmed his desire to fight the charges in court.

But taking media questions after the governor's statement, lawyer Sam Adam Jr. said, "He told me if it doesn't work, if it is too hard if the people of Illinois suffer, he will step aside."

9-year-old called drug dealer over cough drops

Case prompted when student shared Vitamin C candy with friend 

A Florida elementary school accused a 9-year-old student of selling drugs for sharing cough drops with friends.

Officials at Patterson Elementary School in Clay County decided, however, not to discipline Khalin Rivenbark, who met with the girl and her father Wednesday.

The accusation arose one day earlier when the child got into trouble after her father put some Halls Defense Vitamin C cough drops in her school bag when she was recovering from a cold, she told Jacksonville's WJXT-TV

She later shared some with friends.

Suspects printed out armed robbery blueprint from Internet and leave it in getaway car.

DECEMBER 12--After a trio of Ohio women was busted earlier this week following a botched robbery attempt, cops searched the group's getaway car and discovered printed instructions downloaded from the Internet that detailed "How To Commit Armed Robbery In Six Easy Steps." The seized instructions, a copy of which you'll find below, were printed Monday morning at 10:16, about 11 hours before the women sought to hold up the Dollar Tree store in Bedford Heights. When a manager claimed that she could not open the store safe, the alleged robbers--Jocelyn Addison, 19; Nia McBrayer, 21; and Jenniffer Watson, 18--departed empty-handed. Though the downloaded list was clearly written tongue-in-cheek, the suspects, who had masks, a plan, and a bb gun, apparently followed some of its suggestions. According to a December 8 Bedford Police Department report, Addison, McBrayer, and Watson were apprehended in a vehicle about a mile from the convenience store. Each woman was charged with robbery. The Illinois Supreme Court has refused to hear a challenge to Gov. Rod Blagojevich’s fitness to hold office.

A spokesman said Wednesday that the court rejected the challenge without comment.

Attorney General Lisa Madigan had argued Blagojevich’s legal and political troubles are keeping him from performing his duties.

She had argued they amount to a disability, so Blagojevich should have his authority removed temporarily.

Two shot in mock Santa train robbery

RANDOM LAKE, Wis., Dec. 16 (UPI) -- Authorities say two people were injured with shotgun pellets during a mock train robbery involving Santa Claus in Random Lake, Wis.

A gun mistakenly loaded with bird shot, rather than blanks, injured Thomas E. Rumpff, 49, of Sheboygan and a 14-year-old spectator, said the Sheboygan County Sheriff's Department, adding the injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.

The shooting occurred Sunday when Rumpff and other actors pretended to rob a restored 1913 steam train carrying Santa, reported The Sheboygan (Wis.) Press, noting Santa was not injured in the shooting.

An estimated 800 people witnessed the mock shoot-out, though many were unaware anything had gone wrong, said Jerry Thompson, an event organizer.

Amazon Fails At Gift Wrapping Your Nephew's X-Mas Present

Matt would like to let Amazon know that there's no point in gift wrapping a present if you then put the gift wrapped iteminside a box that says what the gift is. This should probably be self-evident — but alas — it isn't.

Matt ordered this copy of "Tales of Beedle The Bard" for his 13-year-old nephew. He paid an extra $4 to have it gift wrapped. Amazon actually gift wrapped it, then put the gift wrapped book inside a box that said what it was. Matt is annoyed.

My 13 year old nephew is a huge Harry Potter fan. So being the loving uncle that I am, I ordered for Christmas the “Tales of Beedle the Bard” special Amazon only deluxe edition. I also paid four dollars to have the gift pre-gift wrapped for Christmas. Unfortunately there will be no glow of surprise and joy as he opens his gift this Christmas. No I did not tell him what he got and yes the gift was properly wrapped. The fail here is the fact that the shipping box was covered in stickers and printing indicating exactly what was inside of the shipping box.

Enjoy this bad packaging.

Jesse Jackson Jr. denies he and his brother were involved in scheme

CHICAGO — Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. flatly denies that he and his brother were involved in a scheme to get him a Senate seat in a deal with scandal-tainted Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich (bluh-GOY'-uh-vich).

The remarks in an interview with The Associated Press Friday came on the heels of a Chicago Tribune report that cited unidentified sources. The newspaper said businessmen with ties to the governor and congressmen discussed raising $1 million for Blagojevich to get him to appoint Jackson to the Senate. The report depicts Jackson's brother as an active participant.

The congressman said "to an absolute certainty" that his brother was not involved in any scheming or wrongdoing.

Jackson has been identified as "Senate Candidate 5" in a federal complaint. The governor is overheard saying the candidate would raise $500,000 for Blagojevich, and an emissary would raise an additional $1 million.
