Joey Chestnut breaks pizza-eating record with 45 slices in 10 minutes

Joey Chestnut, the world's hot-dog eating champ, is a crossover king.

He set a new gut-busting record Sunday with New York City's otherfavorite food - pizza - by downing 45 slices in 10minutes at the Famous Famiglia pizza-eating contest inTimes Square.

"I might be on a liquid diet tonight," the 24-year-old San Jose, Calif., construction manager said through a grin.

He beat 10 other contenders, including the previous pizza-eating recordholder, with a technique that gives new meaning to the expression "fast food."

He folded the slices - very quickly - and shoved them into his mouth. He jumped around some, to help them go down the hatch, or knocked back water from paper cups. He never appeared to chew.

The slices were the typical cheese and tomato sauce variety, dished from a 16-inch pie carved into eight wedges.

Chestnut is a practiced hand at Major League Eating, organizers' George andRichard Shea's tongue-in-cheek name for food faceoffs that include the Fourth of July Nathan's hot dog-eating contest in Coney Island. Chestnut holds that record, too: 66 dogs and buns downed in 12 minutes.

The morning of the pizza matchup, he had coffee for breakfast - and a gallon of water to stretch his stomach muscles. He hadn't had anything but protein supplements for two days before that.

"It's as weird as it gets," he said of competitive eating. "But it's fun. We make people smile."

During his $5,000 prize-winning performance, Chestnut consumed an estimated 11,700 calories and 450 grams of fat. (The city Health Department is campaigning to get adults to eat only 2,000 calories a day.)

He barely beat out Patrick Bertoletti, who sucked down 43 slices. The Chicago chef holds the previous pizza-eating record of 22 slices in 10 minutes. That crust was thicker, Bertoletti noted.

"He is truly a god among eaters," contestant Adam Gertler said of Chestnut. "He could probably put an entire work boot in his mouth."

Matthew Shepard's murder 10 years later

LARAMIE, Wyo. - There are those tragedies that change the way people think about an issue, the way they talk about it.

For instance, 9/11 changed the way we talk about terrorism. 

Matthew Shepard changed the way we talked about violence that’s based in bigotry. 

In the early morning hours of October 8, 1998, Aaron McKinney and Russell Henderson viciously beat Shepard, tied him to a fence and left his broken body exposed to the harsh night. 

He died at Poudre Valley Hospital in Fort Collins on October 12. 

Jim Osborn was a leader in the gay community at University of Wyoming - the college Shepard was attending - when this happened. 

He knew Shepard and, when Shepard died, Osborn knew his purpose in life. 

“I knew that this was where I was supposed to be and to continue the outreach and education that we’ve been doing for years,” he said. 

Osborn stayed at UW and watched Matthew Shepard’s murder become an agent of change. 

“I think nationwide, we talk more about discrimination and violence and hatred,” he said. “I think we talk about bias and prejudice more.” 

Last month, Shepard’s parents, Judy and Dennis, participated in a bench dedication at the University of Wyoming. 

Judy Shepard - who has been a tireless promoter of gay rights - said the change in attitude across the country has not been matched by a change in federal law. 

Specifically, she wants hate crimes legislation passed by Congress. 

“You have to bring the base up to meet the legislators and have them tell their stories about what their lives are like so that everyone is aware of the lives they lead,” she said. 

Judy Shepard knows her son has been an effective poster child in the fight to end intolerance, but she also knows continued change depends on those like Jim Osborn, those who are willing to speak out. 

“I think about the fact that Matt wanted to make the world a better place and his voice has been silenced, he can’t do that anymore,” Osborn said.

Please, Don't Play the Race Card. McCain, Obama.

You know, I am so disappointed that McCain is having his hands tied by the "race card." I completely understand how exciting it is for African Americans to have a black person running for president. I totally "get that". But, please don't see this election as having anything to do with race.

Palin has had her share of problems with being treated in a sexist way. We have a painting of her naked. We have pictures of her feet at the debate. I have heard very few people talk about the horrible things that have been done to Sarah Palin. But yet, now I am hearing reports about McCain's comments about terrorists as being racial. May I remind everyone Ayers is caucasion. This is going to happen. But these comments from Representative John Lewis are horrible.

In a statement issued Saturday, Lewis said McCain and running mate Sarah Palin were "sowing the seeds of hatred and division, and there is no need for this hostility in our political discourse."

Then went on to say,

"George Wallace never threw a bomb. He never fired a gun, but he created the climate and the conditions that encouraged vicious attacks against innocent Americans who were simply trying to exercise their constitutional rights," said Lewis, who is black. "Because of this atmosphere of hate, four little girls were killed on Sunday morning when a church was bombed in Birmingham, Alabama." Basically accusing McCain of duplicating this.

But you know this clip about the "N' word from "The View" made me physically sick. I hate the "N" word and I don't understand this thinking at all. It made me sick because I, like Elisabeth, think of hatred when I hear that word. I don't say that Whoopi can't say it if she wants but don't say you want equality, say you want to be paid back for what was done to your people. At least be honest about that.

I don't think some African Americans understand what it is like for a white person like me, who had a very racist grandfather and rejected all those ideas. I have always believed we are all equal. I did not live in the Civil War. I did not ever believe in slavery. I never ever have believed in discrimination. In another "The View" clip. Whoopi asks Senator McCain if he is going to be a slave again because he believes the constitution should be interpreted the way our founding fathers intended. Meaning, if you want to change it you don't decide yourself from the bench. You vote on it or have the states figure it out. To ask if that means McCain wants slavery is once again playing the race card. And he is asked to take on her feelings from her past. Is this fair?

Does she really believe that? I am sorry but it is hard for some us that keep getting blamed for what happened long before we were born and the worst part of all this is it ties our hands. It keeps us from being able to say what we believe without being judged for our words. It is hard to be treated like that. It is reverse racism, in my humble view. I know how difficult racism has been for people. I really do. Please just understand this, I didn't do this. I did not treat Whoopi unfairly. There is a lot of racism out there but I didn't do it. Is there anyway you could see me as a person and not a race? I don't for one minute take away what was endured by you. But blame who really did it. Not me, not many of my friends and not John McCain.

This clip of a man getting heated at a McCain rally has had the race card played with it.

And of course, some racists have been trying to come out of the woodwork. Socialism has nothing to do with racism. Please don't turn this into race. Sarah Palin has not complained one bit about the rude, gender-biased jokes sent her way just because she is a woman. Let's just say no to racism and sexism.

British-born space tourist, Richard Garriott, blasts off in $30m odyssey

A British-born tycoon made history today as he became the first offspring of a Nasa astronaut to go into space.

Richard Garriott, 47, will dock tomorrow at the International Space Station, 225 miles above Earth, 35 years after his father Owen flew aboard one of Nasa’s last Apollo missions to Skylab, America’s first orbiting laboratory.

The multi-millionaire computer-game developer, who began his working life as a kitchen assistant at Burger King, blasted off from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan today as a private passenger aboard a Soyuz capsule, having paid the Russian space agency $30 million for the privilege and undergone a year’s training.
