Former NFL quarterback Michael Vick pleaded guilty to a state dogfighting charge in Sussex, Va., on Tuesday.

As part of a plea bargain, Vick, 28, pleaded guilty one count of promoting dogfighting and not guilty to a count of cruelty to animals, which was then dropped.

Vick, who was handed a three-year suspended sentence, hopes the deal with allow him to serve the remainder of his sentence in a halfway house.

Federal law prohibits prisoners from being released to a halfway house if unresolved charges are pending.

"I want to apologize to the court, my family, and to all the kids who looked up to me as a role model," Vick told Surry County Circuit Judge Samuel Campbell.
