New York, NY (AHN) - With barely two weeks to the national election, the New York Police Department advised officers to stay out of politics.
Among the acts the police officers were warned about were placing political or campaign stickers or posters on police department vehicles and properties and promotion of any of the national or local candidates particularly the use of police letterhead or other resources to endorse a candidate or political party.
But pundits have questioned have been raised if the police could really steer away from partisan politics because assignments, promotions and other movements in the department are, to a large extent, influenced by politicians.
Even on the local level, this is evident. One instance is the expected endorsement by a dozen law enforcement unions on Tuesday of Leslie Crocker Snyder as district attorney for the Manhattan district. According to the New York Times, because of the past support shown by Brooklyn borough president Marty Markowitz, he has received from the Bloomberg administration $2.7 million taxpayers' money for free concerts and other projects initiated by Markowitz.
