Birmingham Mayor Larry Langford Arrested

BIRMINGHAM, Ala (WBRC-TV MyFoxAL.com)  --  Larry Langford, mayor of Birmingham, was arrested by the FBI Monday morning.

FBI spokesperson Paul Daymond said agents took Langford into custody around 7 a.m., but would not say why.

U.S. Attorney Alice Martin declined immediate comment on the case, but said a news conference would take place at 10:00 a.m. to reveal more details.

The federal charges come as the Securities and Exchange Commission is suing Langford, William Blount and Al LaPierre.  The SEC filed the lawsuit against Langford, Blount and LaPierre on April 30th for more than $150,000 in payments Langford received while serving on the Jefferson County Commission.

Langford has said the claims in the suit were "false and misleading."

LaPierre planned to turn himself in to authorities at the Federal Courthouse on Monday morning, according to LaPierre's attorney, Tommy Spina.

Langford's attorney will also release a statement later on Monday.
