Barack Obama’s aunt may be living in South Boston housing project

On the same day that Sen. Barack Obama launched a multi-million dollar infomercial blitz on national TV, news media outlets around the globe started reporting for the first time that the senator’s aunt may live in a rundown South Boston housing project.

Zeituni Onyango, who lives on Flaherty Way in South Boston, could be Obama’s aunt, on his father’s side of the family, The Times of London reported yesterday.

Onyango, a 56-year-old Kenyan native, confirmed to the newspaper that she is the “Aunti Zeituni” in Obama’s memoir, "Dreams From My Father." In an interview outside her disabled-access apartment on Flaherty Way, Onyango told the newspaper that she didn’t want to say much before the Nov. 4 election.

“I can’t talk about it, I just pray for him, that’s all,” she said, adding: “After the 4th, I can talk to anyone.”

A spokesman for Obama’s campaign, reached this morning in Chicago, could not immediately confirm Obama’s relationship to Onyango.

A message left at Onyango’s apartment this morning was not immediately returned.

The newspaper reports that Onyango is actually Obama’s half aunt. Onyango is the half sister of Obama’s father, Barack Obama Sr.

Onyango received a small stipend over the past year working six hours a week as a volunteer resident health advocate for the Boston Housing Authority, the newspaper reported.
