EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — The relative calm surrounding the Giants’ defense of their Super Bowl title was disrupted Wednesday morning when they announced the two-week suspension of Plaxico Burress, their star wide receiver.
Because the Giants have a bye week with no game this weekend, Burress will miss one game, on Oct. 5 against Seattle at Giants Stadium.
“Burress has been suspended for one game for violating team rules,” the statement said.
According to FoxSports.com, which first reported the suspension, Burress was suspended for missing a team practice on Monday and not returning phone calls to explain his absence on Monday and Tuesday.
The Giants have started their season with three straight victories and Burress has caught 18 passes for 259 yards and one touchdown. Last season, he caught 70 passes for 1,025 yards and 12 touchdowns, and he caught the game-winning pass in the Super Bowl, a 17-14 victory over New England.
On the day of the season opener against Washington on Sept. 4, Burress signed a $35 million contract that was to pay him $11 million this season.
Jerry Reese, the general manager of the Giants, said Wednesday morning that Burress had met with Reese and Coach Tom Coughlin earlier in the day. When asked if Burress was physically O.K., Reese said, “He’s fine.”
